Detroit Tigers Call Dibs on First Five Picks in 2012 Draft

In an effort to restock a dwindling farm system, the Detroit Tigers announced today that are calling dibs on the top five slots in next year’s amateur draft. The announcement came after Detroit management decided they didn’t want to let the Royals, Astros, Cubs, Orioles, and Marlins get the top five players for yet another year.

“We’ve gotten sick of the best players in the draft being wasted on the same cellar-dwelling team’s year in and year out,” Said GM David Dombrowski, “So we made the decision to call dibs on the top five. We understand this is an unconventional decision, but we believe that MLB will respect the inherent laws of dibs.”

When asked about whether or not the MLB would respect the Tigers decision, Bud Selig responded that of course they would.

“We’re not barbarians. Obviously they’re going to get the first five picks. Dibs are dibs, regardless of the written rules. Quite frankly, I’m surprised no one has called it before. I have no issues taking away these picks from the other teams, it’s not like they were ever going to get any better because of those picks. The only rule we have is that a team can only dibs five picks at a time.”

Anticipated top five pick Lance McCullers stated that he was extremely relieved about the decision.

“I was trying to play myself out of the top five to ten picks, “Said McCullers, “But now I can actually try hard and fulfill my potential without the fear of going to the Astros or Marlins.”

Royals Gm Dayton Moore was visibly shaken after seeing the announcement on Sportscenter. When asked for his thoughts on the decision, he had this to say.

“I’m just upset that no one in our organization told me that we could dibs picks. All these years we’ve been purposely playing bad so that we could obtain a top pick. This is going to set back our rebuilding effort at least a year if not two.”

The Brewers and Diamondbacks responded to the Tigers announcement by dibsing the next ten picks respectively.

  2. Couldn't enjoy the joke cuz the premise is so flawed. Turner, Smyly,Collins, Castellanos, Burgos, Brantly, Vasquez, and Crosby makes for a VERY STRONG farm system.

  3. Baseball America ranks them 25th
    Keith Law 25th
    Baseball Prospectus 27th

I wouldn't call that a very strong system.

  4. Eric, Those rags you cite as credible have a pathetic track record in rating talent.

While they were hyping busts like Cale Iorg, Wilkin Ramirez, Jeff Larish, Andrew Miller, Gorkys Hernandez over the years, our farm produced talented bigs like Jurrjens, Joyce, Avila, Boesch, and Moscoso.....players they largely ignored.

This year they ranked Andrew Oliver, 4.92 ERA and 1.56 WHIP, as our 3rd best prospect. Francisco Martinez, 32 errors in 109 games, as our 4th best prospect? What a joke.

Turner, Smyly and Burgos are going to be 3 very good big league starters...ie. better than Porcello, Fister, and Penny. Some organizations don't even have 1 legit starter in their system let alone 3.

Tyler Collins and Castellanos are going to be 2 very good bats in the bigs. Of course you may prefer published opinions on "high ceiling" flops like Daniel Fields and Avisail Garcia.

Our system, as time will prove, should be ranked in the top 10.

  5. You know, most farm systems can say that they've produced 5 or 6 pretty good players. You're greatly overvaluing the Tigers' prospects

Turner is the Tigers' only true blue chip prospect - he definitely has ace talent. Castellanos is raw, but has a good chance to be a star.

Pretty much everyone else in the system is nothing special. Smyly is pretty good (#3 ceiling probably) but on a farm system like the Rays have, he wouldn't be in the top 20.

Oliver probably IS our 3rd best prospect and that says a lot more about the Tigers' farm system than it does Oliver.

  6. The Braves have 3 major league ready starting pitchers in the minors that all have #1-3 stuff. Lots of systems have talent, it's more about how much talent and whether they will be stuck behind some one indefinitely.

  7. Oliver was our 3rd best prospect, prior to 2011. He was a top 100 prospects too, but he has just not performed this year. I'd say that spot goes to smyly/crosby now.
